On Wednesday I heard an on-line lecture by Ronald James from Nevada. It was very interesting. His subject was Cornish men and Cornish women in Nevada during the gold-rush. They brought with them their mining skills and also their stories about the little people - the knockers. They had their own row of houses - Cornish Row. The knockers live in the mines! Why Tommy Knockers. Perhaps because the mines in Cornwall are hot. Now it's the name of a beer. (And there were people from Ireland there too.)
