In the year 1432, the second day of May, some pilgrims wanted to go to St James (Santiago) Galicia (the oldest pilgrimage in Europe). A licence was granted to a certain "Sailing Master" at Falmeth for carrying them. In the year 1456, 17th May, licence was again granted to Falmouth and Fowey ship masters to carry pilgrims to St. James Galicia. Santiago is not by the sea, so every pilgrim had to walk several miles as well. In 1534 King Henry separated from the Church of Rome and started the Church of England. Catholic pilgrimages were banned. Yet, on 29th May 1538 there was a rebellious pilgrimage from Truro to Brittany. Eleven years later, there was the Prayer Book Rebellion.
