Let's go for a ramble in the countryside! The weather's not too bad and we could avoid the rain. What can we see in the middle of winter? It's time for the farmers to trim their verges and hedges. In past times the plants were cut by hand with slashing hooks (billhooks). Today farmers have tractors and cutting machines and they can work very quickly – before birds want to make nests. The hedges are not so tidy these days. One lane was too full of mud, so we turned around and took another route. In the past (when I was a girl) there were haystacks in fields, nowadays there are large bales wrapped in black plastic. In the distance you can see an ancient hillfort. What a contrast that is!
