There is sadness in Padstow today. The people couldn't have their usual May Day festival. The Old 'Obby 'Oss remained in its stable in the Golden Lion Inn. The Blue Ribbon 'Obby 'Oss had to stay in its stable in the Institute. In past years there were two processions through the town with music (accordions and drums) and dancing. The people were dressed in white with red ribbons and kerchiefs for followers of one (the old horse) and blue ribbons and kerchiefs for the other. The town was decorated (at midnight) with greenery and flowers and there was a maypoleA special song was sung in the night and again in the day. The two hobbyhorses are very strange, each one worn by a man, with a mask and a big frame covered in black. Perhaps it will be possible to see them next year.
