I found a little old book called
"Canow Nadelek" (Christmas Songs). They are carols and Christmas
hymns. The orthography is not up to date. Can I translate one song? Here's the first
verse in two forms.
In a manger,
without bed nor cradle,
The little Lord, Jesus,
he sleeps in peace;
Stars in the sky,
look downwards,

placed in hay.
There are many popular images of the night sky and mangers filled with hay (or a bit empty except for a swaddling cloth).
