Captain Stephen Hutchens (he died in 1709) gave £100 to the church of Paul, for repairing and beautifying it. (In 1595 the church was burnt by Spanish soldiers - perhaps more work was needed.) He gave £600 too, to build a house for six poor men and six poor women born in the parish and to support them. Perhaps the gold was stolen from a Spanish galleon! On his memorial is written this verse:

'Life without end is the reward of your charity to the poor people of Paul and our church.'
