How could sailors pass the days in a ship on the sea? There wasn't work to do all the time. They did handicrafts. Perhaps Captain Jack Lowry cut wood from South America and carved these frames for photos and postcards. Certainly he wrote a diary, as well as the vessel's log-book, and letters to his wife in Cornwall. Sailors used to collect things, beautiful seashells, for example. There are shells not found in Cornwall. Perhaps they were a nice present to give to his daughters.
