This month is named for white straw in the corn fields, but the wheat, oats and barley were cut last month. Today I am looking over gates and seeing another harvest. The farmer is digging potatoes with a giant machine. There are lots of gates hereabouts - big gates in hedges and small gates in stone walls, old gates and new gates, gates into fields and gardens, gates made of wood (or rusty iron).
