There is sad news. A bookshop in Truro is going to close. I found interesting books in it in the past. It's a good shop for old and odd books, and books about Cornwall. Several years ago I read a book by Alan Kent about three Methodist writers in the China Clay District. After that I bought a book by Joseph Hocking for 50p in that bookshop. The book "Roger Trewinion" was published in London but sold in the first place in Penzance, by an important Methodist bookseller, Saundry,13, Chapel Street. That shop is also gone.

Everywhere there are trees without leaves or trees with dead leaves. However, there are green leaves on evergreen trees and shrubs. There are already flowers on this shrub. We see winter and spring together, one against the other. The shrub catches sun in the east in the morning. There are first primroses on an eastern slope. Birds are making a lot of noise in the hazel hedges among the catkins. Perhaps they think it is spring.

Happy First Day of February to you. We are now between the winter Solstice (before Christmas) in December and the spring Equinox in March (before Easter). It's Imbolc - a pagan holiday in Ireland and Scotland - perhaps very very old. It was for the beginning of Spring, the birth of new lambs and the start of ewes' milk. The Celtic Goddess Brigid is honoured. She is associated with milk and fire.

Can you see any family resemblance? I do not have a beard but I do have the round head! This gentleman is my grandmother's father. He is a link for me to the American Civil War. He was born, on this day, two years before its start and I was two years old in the year he died.

There is nothing under the sea in St Piran's Cove, apart from sand. But below the sea near St Michael's Mount (the Grey Rock in the Wood) there are fossilised old trees. We can see them at a time of very low tide. We can see shipwrecks at low tide in Carbis Bay. They are rusted iron - Victorian steamships. They were  run aground by a terrible storm.
